WAVE Visits University of Huddersfield Engineering Student Showcase

Although we’re a little late in sharing it, we couldn’t let the opportunity pass without recognising a fantastic visit to the University of Huddersfield’s School of Computing and Engineering Student Showcase.
On the 19th June, WAVE’s Managing Director Mark Williams M.Inst.R and Business Development Manager Sam Parris F.Inst.R attended the event, where final-year students presented the projects and research they had spent the past academic year developing.
The showcase brought together an impressive range of disciplines, including Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automotive Engineering, and Civil Engineering. It provided a great opportunity to see the innovation, technical ability and fresh thinking coming from the next generation of engineers.
Throughout the day, we enjoyed speaking with many of the students about their projects, the challenges they had overcome and their ambitions for the future. It was encouraging to see not only the quality of work on display, but also the enthusiasm, curiosity and dedication behind it.
One conversation that stood out was with Karl Walton, where we had the opportunity to talk about refrigeration engineering—described as the “less sexy” side of engineering (his words, not ours!). While refrigeration may not always be the first discipline that comes to mind, it plays a vital role in modern society, supporting everything from food production and cold chain logistics to healthcare, manufacturing and sustainability. We were delighted to share a little more about the industry and the rewarding careers it offers.
The warm weather on the day provided a timely reminder of just how important refrigeration engineering really is. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to get a photograph of Mark and Sam together with some of the students, but they did all manage to enjoy a well-earned ice cream! 🍦
At WAVE, we’re passionate about supporting the development of future engineers and engaging with universities to help students understand the breadth of opportunities available within our industry.
We’re also looking forward to meeting with Karl again in September to explore how we can further engage with engineering students and raise awareness of the refrigeration and HVAC sector. Together, we hope to highlight the exciting and rewarding career opportunities available, and how engineers in our industry can make a real difference through innovation, sustainability and the technologies that underpin everyday life.
